“It was so cold that I enjoyed it when someone spilled hot coffee on my lap”

The Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants (1994) “hot coffee lawsuit” resulted from McDonald’s restaurants serving very hot coffee, but what if it’s very cold outside? “The weather turned so cold in Upper Michigan last week that McDonald’s customers who spilled coffee in their laps weren’t calling their lawyers” was printed in The State Journal-Register (Springfield, IL) on April 22, 1995. “It was so cold, McDonald’s was charging extra to pour scalding hot coffee in your lap,”  American television host David Letterman said on the New York City-based Late Show with David Letterman program on January 6, 1999.

“It was so cold…I actually enjoyed it when someone spilled scalding hot coffee on my lap!” was printed on the Athropolis blog on February 20, 2004.

Wikipedia: Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants
Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants, also known as the McDonald’s coffee case and the hot coffee lawsuit, was a 1994 product liability lawsuit that became a flashpoint in the debate in the United States over tort reform. Although a New Mexico civil jury awarded $2.86 million to plaintiff Stella Liebeck, a 79-year-old woman who suffered third-degree burns in her pelvic region when she accidentally spilled hot coffee in her lap after purchasing it from a McDonald’s restaurant, ultimately Liebeck was only awarded $640,000. Liebeck was hospitalized for eight days while she underwent skin grafting, followed by two years of medical treatment.
