“It’ll be greater later” (motivational saying)

“It gets greater later” (or “It’ll get greater later”) is a motivational saying that has been printed on several images. Authorship is unknown.

“Things will get greater later” was printed in the Detroit (MI) News on August 6, 1990. “It gets greater, later” was printed in the St. Petersburg (FL) Times on October 25, 1992. “It’ll be greater later” was printed in the North Hills (PA) News Record on April 16, 1997.

PITTSBURGH: Steelers safety Myron Bell hopes to test his motto on the free agent market next season.

“It’ll be greater later,” Bell said Tuesday after signing a one-year, $361,000 contract. “I live by that motto.”

18 May 1997, The Independent (London, UK), pg. 25:
The Watts Prophets: The Black Voices on the Streets in Watts; Rappin’ Black in a White World; When the 90s Came (Acid Jazz, CD only). As with their East Coast peers The Last Poets, the legendary status of these militant LA rap pioneers has been taken largely on trust. Now, with the reissue of their two seminal - and the priapic intensity of this material makes that overused adjective the only one that fits - 1970- 71 recordings On the Streets and Rappin’ Black . . . a wider audience can finally discover whether the Watts Prophets’ reputation is justified. Emerging from the Watts Writers’ Workshop in the aftermath of the uprising of 1965, poets Amde Hamilton, Otis O’Solomon Smith and Richard Dedeaux strove to fashion a verbal assault of sufficient ferocity to match the array of social and political forces they saw lined up against them. Listening to “Things Are Gonna Get Greater Later” and the infamous “I’ll Stop Calling You Niggers When You Start Acting Like Black Men”, it’s hard not to be impressed by the extent to which they succeeded.

Summary:
“Trails and tribulations are the lessons of life. But for six year old Kyla Johnson her lessons were painful heartfelt, and destructive. As she witnessed the senseless death of her mother, the incarceration of her father and the separation from her brother, a child will blossom into womanhood without sympathy and empathy maturing in a world with the only tool for survival is a con.

12 December 2013, Tell me More (NPR), “Original Dreamgirl Jennifer Holliday: ‘I’m Not Going Nowhere’”:
JENNIFER HOLLIDAY: Don’t try to figure out how the book ends because it takes different twists and turns. And how do we adapt to each twist and turn? Just because I’m a singer doesn’t mean I’m better than someone else. You know, I’d be so wealthy now just if I could sell singing, but I can’t. If you can’t sing, you can’t sing. I’m not going to do it for you, you know. But that doesn’t mean I’m better than you. That doesn’t mean that the gift that I have is better than your gift. Let’s find out what your gift is. And I tell people - my favorite thing is - it’ll get greater later, but you got to stick around to see your life turn around. If you don’t stick around, then you’ll never know.
