“January is the Monday of the year”

The month of January is the first month of the year, and it has been compared to Monday, the first day of a usual work week. Both January and Monday are frequently unloved.

“January is the Monday of the year” has been cited in print since at least 1958.

“January (n.) A giant Monday” and “Ugh…January. The whole month is just a giant Monday” are related sayings.

16 January 1958, The Evening Gazette (Washington, DC), “January Rut,” pg. 10, col. 1:
January is a singularly unlovable month. Poems and songs are never written to it, and as January unfolds its endless length, it is easy to see why. January is the Monday of the year.

30 January 1994, The Guardian (Manchester, UK), “Just when you thought it was safe to return to the wine bar ...” by Andrew Anthony, pg. ?:
`I always say January is the Monday of the year,’ says Dominic. `But look how crowded it is.’
