“Just saw loads of pears at a meeting. They must be Conference pears”

The name “Conference pear” has been the subject of several jokes. “When Worcs CCC hold a committee meeting is it called a ‘Conference Pear’???” was posted to the newsgroup uk.sport.cricket on October 15, 2001. “Just seen loads of pears at a meeting, they must be conference pears” was posted on Twitter on February 5, 2017.

“Before Conference pears, we could only talk to one pear at a time” is another joke about Conference pears.

Wikipedia: Conference pear
A Conference pear is a variety of pear.

It is an autumn cultivar (cultivated variety) of the European pear (Pyrus communis). This variety of pear was developed in Britain by Thomas Rivers. It owes its name to the fact that it won first prize at the National British Pear Conference in London in 1885.

A thought. Why are Conference pears so called? Why not Seminar pears, or Board-meeting pears? What’s “conference” about them?
