Kapas (Korean tapas)

“Tapas” is the Spanish variety of appetizers or snack. “Kapas” (Korean tapas) is a feature of the Chom Chom restaurant (40 West 56th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues in Manhattan) that opened in December 2009.
 
Chom Chom’s “Kapas” menu features very diffierent ingredients and choices than the Spanish tapas, with dishes including kimchi and tofu.

Tapas (IPA: [ˈtaˌpas]) is the name of a wide variety of appetizers, or snacks, in Spanish cuisine. They may be cold (such as mixed olives and cheese) or warm (such as puntillitas, which are battered, fried baby squid).
 
In North America and the United Kingdom, as well as in select bars in Spain, tapas have evolved into an entire, and sometimes sophisticated, cuisine. In these countries, patrons of tapas restaurants can order many different tapas and combine them to make a full meal.
 
The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused upon eating an entire meal that is set before them. Also, in some countries it is customary for diners to stand and move about while eating tapas.

went the other night, food is excellent! mix of traditional korean and some fusion dishes, lots of dishes to share (they call them “kapas” which I guess is Korean tapas). I recommend the Japchae, enjoy!

im close friends with the owners of this restaurant, its definitely worth checking out. they get all their spices and key ingredients shipped in from south korea so the food is really authentic, but everything is served in a really modern way. a big part of their menu is “kapas” (aka korean tapas), which is a really unique twist to korean food. so for those who are always sticking to the same key dishes like bibimbop and bulgogi, its the perfect way to venture out and try different things, like the tofu pizza and spicy shrimp app. and you MUST try their kalbi, honestly the best i ever had.
