“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it”

“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it” (or “Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it”) is a saying that has been printed on many images. Authorship of the saying is uncertain.

“Always in this life it isn’t what happens to you that matters; it’s how you react to what happens that proves your class” was printed in the Detroit (MI) Free Press on January 25, 1938. “It isn’t what happens to you, but how you react to it, that makes this business of growing up so important to your future happiness and success” was printed in the Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) Star-Phoenix on February 19, 1949. “It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it, and stand up under it, which determines the final score” was printed in the Hartford (CT) Courant on August 29, 1953.

Percentages were added to the quotation by at least the 1970s and 1980s. “‘Life,’ someone said, ‘is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you react to what happens to you’” was printed in Success Unlimited in 1974. ““I’ve always said 10 percent of life is what happens to you. The other 90 percent is how you react” was printed in Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram on September 13, 1987.

“I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it” has been credited to evangelical Christian pastor, author and educator Charles Swindoll since at least 1993. Swindoll was born in 1934, so he could not have coined the original saying.

Charles Swindoll said:

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. Nor can we change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We also cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you—we are in charge of our attitudes.
