Little Apple (Yonkers, New York)

Yonkers is located next to New York City (the “Big Apple”), and the nickname “Little Apple” has been infrequently used.

“Little Apple (Yonkers, that is)” was printed in The Herald Statesman (Yonkers, NY) on February 9, 1971. “We’re the Little Apple, right next to the Big Apple” was said by Yonkers City Manager Vincent Castaldo and printed in the New York (NY) Times on October 5, 1976. “I’ll be running for mayor of yonkers The little Apple, a stone throw away from The Big Apple” was posted on Twitter by Frank Spotorno on October 26, 2014.

“Little Apple” is also used as a nickname of Manhattan (Kansas), Ithaca (New York) and Toronto (Canada). Roosevelt Island (New York City) used the “Little Apple” nickname in the 1970s.
