Living Landmarks
The private New York Landmarks Conservancy began naming "living landmarks" at a fundraising dinner in 1994. These are "New Yorkers who have made New York New York."

One example of a "living landmark" is Joan Rivers, so I guess landmark facelifts are OK.

Six living landmarks wre honored in 1994 and six more last year, among them Helen Gurley Brown, the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine; Walter Cronkite, the former CBS Bews anchor; and Arthur Mitchell, the founder of the Dance Theater of Harlem.

This year's group is made up of Brooke Astor, the philanthropist, 94; Al Hirschfeldm the illustrator, 93; Liz Smith, the celebrity columnist, 73; Dr. Mathilde Krim, a founder of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, 70; Felix G. Rohatyn, the former chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation, 68; and Peter Durching, the band leader, 59. "These are people who make New York New York," said Peg Breen, the president of the Landmarks Conservancy.
