Manfluence (man + influence); Manfluencer (man + influencer)

Midan Marketing trademarked the term “manfluence” with a first use of March 2012. The marketing term “manfluence” (man + influence) means that men must be influenced for some non-manly behaviors, such as purchasing yogurt. “Manfluencers” (man + influencer), such as male-oriented advertising and product design, help in the “manfluence” needed to get men to purchase certain products.

“Manlfuence” had been used before 2012. “Which is Stronger, Manfluence or Godfluence?” was the title of a November 2006 blog article, but this “manfluence” meant “the influence of man” (people)—something different than the marketing term. “Manfluence” was popularized in October 2013, when the term appeared in a Wall Street Journal article, on the Today morning television show and on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

MANFLUENCE
As women increase their presence in the work force, more men are sharing household responsibilities like grocery shopping and meal preparation. We first identified this “manly” trend as “Manfluence™” in our 2012 Breaking the Pattern research.

To discover more about the potential effect of this Manfluence movement, we interviewed 900 men online about how they buy and prepare meat. What emerged from our research is an eye-opening profile of today’s male consumer that pokes a hole in our long-held assumptions about how the “typical” man shops for and eats meat.

I’ve often thought about the situation of the world. If I was born in India, I’d probably be a Hindu. If it was Brazil, I’d be Roman Catholic.

As Men Shop More, Packaging Aims to Win Them Over; ‘Inner Abs’ Appeal

Yogurt for men is radically different from the yogurt women buy: The label is black.

Food makers, including giants Kraft Foods Group Inc. KRFT +1.33%  and General Mills Inc., GIS +1.39%  eager for any potential new sales, are trying to win over men. Research indicates men are doing a greater share of the grocery shopping and meal preparation.

In a June survey of 900 meat-eating men ages 18 to 64, 47% were deemed “manfluencers” by Midan Marketing LLC, a Chicago market research group focused on the meat industry. Manfluencers are responsible for at least half of the grocery shopping and meal preparation for their households.
