Mask Trap (police trap for enforcing face mask use)

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic resulted in some requirements to wear face masks. Police in some areas set up “mask traps,” similar to “speed traps” for automobiles on a highway. Police would be outside of a store and wait for people to leave the store and take off a face mask, and then a summons would be issued. “Mask trap” sounds a bit like “mouse trap.”

“The only reason local authorities are recommending masks be worn in cars is to make it easier for law enforcement to set up cash-generating ‘mask traps’. Who needs a speed trap!” was posted on Twitter by Passion4Truth on April 12, 2020. “The peace of knowing that rn traffic police aren’t setting speed traps but permit and mask traps..!” was posted on Twitter by King Gezindaba II on May 1, 2020. “Mask traps. NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Dean Gonzalez was wearing his face mask when he went to a supermarket in North Miami Beach, but he received a $110 citation anyway.

He said there were police officers who were not wearing their uniforms waiting for people outside. Gonzalez recorded a video of his interaction with police officers.

MIAMI POLICE SETTING UP ‘MASK TRAPS,’ ISSUING $100 FINES TO PEOPLE WEARING MASKS IMPROPERLY
Posted by Reason | Jul 27, 2020 | Politics & Culture
It’s been less than two weeks since Miami-Dade County announced it would be fining people for not wearing masks in public. Already, Florida media outlets are filled with stories of people cited for wearing masks improperly, lowering masks to sip a drink, or removing their face coverings once outside of a store.

On Thursday, the Miami Herald reported that the Miami-Dade Police Department has issued 162 citations for violating the county’s mandatory mask ordinance, which comes with a $100 penalty.

Miami Police Set Up ‘Mask Traps,’ Issue $100 Fines For Wearing Improperly

“No one is safe from Miami-Dade’s new $100 no-mask fine. Not even people wearing masks,” said the Miami Herald headline.

Two weeks ago, officials in Miami-Dade County announced it would start issuing $100 fines for people for not wearing masks in public. But as usual, the over-the-top edict has been misapplied, with Florida media outlets jammed with reports about people being fined for wearing masks improperly, dropping the mask to eat or drink, or taking it off once safely outside a store.
