Melancauliflower or Melancholiflower (melancholy + cauliflower); Meloncauliflower, Meloncholiflower

Cauliflower sometimes has the jocular portmanteau words “melancauliflower” and “melancholiflower” (melancholy + cauliflower), and sometimes “meloncauliflower” and “meloncholiflower.” “My Melancauliflower Blues” was posted on the newsgroup alt.music.queen on November 22, 1999. “A despondent vegetable|||melancauliflower” was posted on Twitter on November 5, 2009. “Melancholiflower #sadvegetables” was posted on Twitter on July 28, 2012.

“I shall become Melon-Cauliflower, and wither away” was printed in an 1853 newspaper. “Consider the riddles and puns in Comic Papers, and ask yourself why it is that the ideas are connected with one another; why it is, for instance, that the person, who was told that a friend was suffering from Meloncauliflower and Haricot Veins” was published in a 1901 book.

The “melancholy” pun sometimes clearly involves both “melon” (a fruit) and “cauliflower” (a vegetable). “New invention - ‘Meloncauliflower - A fruit/vegetable hybrid known for triggering feelings of thoughtful sadness” was posted on Twitter on April 13, 2010. “Eating a mixture of fruit and veg often leaves me feeling meloncauliflower” was posted on Twitter on January 24, 2011. “What do you call a plant that’s sad because it doesn’t know whether it’s a fruit or a vegetable? a meloncauliflower” was posted on Twitter on August 1, 2014.

“What do you get when you mix a broccoli and a melon?”/“The saddest vegetable: a melonccoli” is a related riddle with a food portmanteau.

Wikipedia: Cauliflower
Cauliflower is one of several vegetables in the species Brassica oleracea in the genus Brassica, which is in the family Brassicaceae. It is an annual plant that reproduces by seed. Typically, only the head is eaten – the edible white flesh sometimes called “curd” (similar appearance to cheese curd). The cauliflower head is composed of a white inflorescence meristem. Cauliflower heads resemble those in broccoli, which differs in having flower buds as the edible portion. Brassica oleracea also includes broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, collard greens, and kale, collectively called “cole” crops, though they are of different cultivar groups.

And now Sweet Peas be with Yew; and if he who tries it Tares me from Yew, I shall become Melon-Cauliflower, and wither away.

How to Remember, Without Memory Systems Or with Them
By Eustace Miles
London: Frederick Warne & Co.
1901
Pg. 214:
Consider the riddles and puns in Comic Papers, and ask yourself why it is that the ideas are connected with one another; why it is, for instance, that the person, who was told that a friend was suffering from Meloncauliflower and Haricot Veins, immediately knew that the friend was actually suffering from Melancholia and Varicose Veins; obviously the words were connected together because they sounded alike.
