“Men make counterfeit money; in many more cases, money makes counterfeit men”

“Men make counterfeit money; in many more cases, money makes counterfeit men” is a quotation that has been printed on many images. American journalist Sydney J. Harris (1917-1986) wrote in his syndicated newspaper column on March 10, 1966:

“A few men make counterfeit money; in many more cases, money makes counterfeit men.”

The “A few” beginning is usually cut off when the quotation is cited.

This quotation reminds the reader that more men have been lead to corruption and wrongness by their behavior in pursuit of money then have been left there by creating counterfeit money. So, the men become counterfeit men because they give up their true selves while doing things, that compromise them, to gain wealth.
