“‘Moderate Republican’—that’s kind of like having a gun rack on a Volvo” (also, “‘Compassionate Conservative—that’s kind of like having a gun rack on a Volvo”) is a joke by American comedian Robin Williams (1951-2014). The “Compassionate Conservative” version was cited in print in 2006; Williams possibly said it on The Tonight Show with host Jay Leno. The “Moderate Republican” version was said in a 2009 concert, when Williams was referring to Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
 
A Volvo is a family car; gun racks are more usually found on pickup trucks.
