“They picked me for my motivational skills. Everyone else works twice as hard”

“I think they picked me for my motivational skills. Everyone always says they have to work twice as hard when I’m around!” is a jocular line. The saying originated on the American animated sitcom The Simpsons. Homer Simpson said:

“I think Mr. Smithers picked me for my motivational skills.  Everyone always says they have to work twice as hard when I’m around!”

The line was cited in the newsgroup alt.tv.simpsons in 1998.

I usually don’t contribute to these “Character X’s Best Line” dilly-o’s, but I just remembered one of my favourite of Homer’s:

“I think Mr. Smithers picked me for my motivational skills.  Everyone always says they have to work twice as hard when I’m around!”

Homer’s delusions may run deep (“I think Smithers picked me for my motivational skills… everyone says they have to work a lot harder when I’m around”), but they don’t extend to imagining that he could last long without Marge and the children.
