“My desire to be well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane”

“My desire to be well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The most popular image is a cartoon by David Sipress, and he wrote in The New Yorker on February 3, 2017:

“‘Well-informed’ never appeared in The New Yorker. In fact, I’m not sure where it was first published. It dates from the Clinton Administration, and I have no memory of what event or series of events inspired it.”

“My desire to stay well informed is at odds with my desire to stay sane” is a popular variant. “Cartoon: ‘My desire to stay well informed is currently at odds with my desire to stay sane’.  Minnesota caucus night” was posted on Twitter by BJ Wahlstrom on February 7, 2012. “My desire to stay well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to stay sane.  #myheadisgoingtoexplode” was posted on Twitter by Pamela Version 2.020 ♜ on February 24, 2012.

The New Yorker
How to Stay Sane as a Cartoonist in Trumpland
By David Sipress
February 3, 2017
(A cartoon shows two people waking and one says, “My desire to be well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane.”—ed.)
Of all my cartoons, the one above is the most published, republished, tweeted, retweeted, liked, shared, or stolen and reprinted without my permission. Just this week, the cartoon was featured in a Times article about coping with the relentless and unsettling news environment that we’re living in these days.

“Well-informed” never appeared in The New Yorker. In fact, I’m not sure where it was first published. It dates from the Clinton Administration, and I have no memory of what event or series of events inspired it.

My desire to stay well informed on issues and events is at odds with my desire to stay sane and not fall into an existential crisis.
