Please consider amending your advice: MY MASK PROTECTS YOU, YOUR MASK PROTECTS ME instead of WEAR A MASK ONLY IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS. 1) The virus transmits even in the pre-symptomatic stage. 2) Even home-made masks reduce transmission. 3) Stigmatizing mask-wearers is dangerous.

The most important message shared in the Czech Republic has been this: “My mask protects you; your mask protects me.” Wearing a mask there is now considered a prosocial behavior. Going outside without one is frowned on as an antisocial action that puts your community at risk. In fact, the community reaction has been so strong that the government has responded by making it illegal to go out in public without a mask.

Homemade masks protect everyone else from droplets created by the wearer. It’s important that as many people as possible wear masks when leaving home.
You DON’T need a surgical mask or N95—save those for front line responders.

The use of simple cloth face coverings can slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Coverings can be made from household items or made at home from common materials at a low cost. Visit the CDC website for instructions on how to create a face covering at home . The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.
