“Hick hop” is a combination of country music and hip-hop. It also goes by the names for country-hip hop, country-rap, hill hop,  and hip hopry.
 
Cowboy Troy (of Victoria and Dallas, Texas) recorded “Hick-Hop Hysteria” in 2001. He popularized the term “hick hop,” but it had been current since at least 1999.

Career
Cowboy Troy began performing in 1989 and developed a style he calls “hick-hop,” which blends various country, rock, rap and tejano influences. He often raps in Spanish as well as English. When you’re six feet, five inches tall you stand out. Add a cowboy hat and you stand out even more. Then, make the subject from Texas with darker than average skin and there’s no question that Cowboy Troy (AKA Troy Coleman) isn’t exactly an average guy.  Yet while Troy may revel in being instantly identifiable from the rank and file in many ways, he also feels that his music shouldn’t be deemed something outrageous, gimmicky, or bizarre. “I grew up listening to a mix of country music, rap and rock, with a little bit of funk and pop,” Coleman says. “That didn’t make me unusual back home (Dallas, Texas). Whenever I would go into the honky-tonks and they put on Run-DMC or Sir Mix-A-Lot, the floor would be packed with the cowboy hats swaying and people having a good time dancing. So it didn’t seem like that big a deal for me once I decided to try music that all these things would converge in my music.”
 
Mix in like-minded co-producer John Rich (AKA J. MONEY) and this convergence really starts to make sense.  “John was one of the first people in the business that understood how natural what I was doing really was and that it wasn’t an act, just a natural extension of myself and my musical influences,” Troy remembers. 
 
Yet it’s precisely that different blend, a convergence of country, rap and rock that Troy dubbed “hick-hop,” that’s still causing quite a stir throughout the country music world.

Hey Liz.Wild Kingdom, to my knowledge,was around for avout ten years, combining the likes of Punk and ska. In my opinion they were one of the best bans around. They have now dropped the singer and guitar player and regrouped as a hick-hop band called Citizen King.

I’m heading up to the big city tomorrow myself, to check out the Blueground Undergrass CD Release Party at Variety Playhouse (with Donna the Buffalo).  Those guys are amazing…somewhere (hard to tell where) between the Clinch Mountain Boys and The Aquarium Rescue Unit. Psychedelic.  Hick-Hop.  Space-age bluegrass.  Want to be blown away, check it out.  I’ll be up front.

Anyone who was that fly wouldn’t give two ghetto passes what the rap community thought.  Besides, I think you better go pick up last month’s Rolling Stone and check out the Kid Rock pictures.  Your country-rap superhero pimp may be more of a reality than you know.  Ever heard of hick-hop?
   
giggles…nope but at least now i know it’s been named!!!ROFL i love it hick hop…and i love kid rock too you are so right he is pretty close to a country-rap-more rock rap maybe?-but close….ROFLMFAO!!!

I was pleased to see an article about Jim White who plays what he calls “Hick-hop”. I’m not sure that quite describes his music but the “alternative country” title doesn’t fit either. Interesting stuff. With
songs like “Handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi”, “Wrong-eyed Jesus” and “10 miles to go on a 9 mile road” it sure found a home in my collection.
