New York Steamer (sandwich)

“New York Steamer” is a trademarked sub sandwich from Firehouse Subs, a Florida-based restaurant chain. The chain began in 1994, and the name was also trademarked in 1994. Firehouse Subs describes the New York Steamer as “USDA Choice Corned beef brisket and pastrami, melted provolone, deli mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing.”

The name “New York” was probably chosen because the sandwich resembles New York deli sandwiches of corned beef and pastrami. “Steamer” might possibly evoke the famous 1807 steamboat of Robert Fulton (1765-1815). “Steamer” might also mean hot food, especially food that is steamed. “Steamie” (“steamé” in French) is the name of a Montreal hot dog.

In the 1990s, the slang term “Cleveland steamer” developed, with “steamer” meaning a (steaming/steamrolling) pile of defecation. The term “New York Steamer” was added to the Urban Dictionary on June 24, 2009, and again to the Urban Dictionary on January 13, 2010, but the New York term is not standard slang and appears just an arbitrary extension of “Cleveland Steamer.”

“Some of the names of Firehouse subs sound like Urban Dictionary sex positions, e.g., ‘New York Steamer’” was posted on Twitter by Nate on February 7, 2011. “Just ate a fully involved Hook-n-Ladder sub from FireHouse Subs. Which inspired me to make my own New York Steamer in the restroom!” was posted on Twitter by paucoo on February 18, 2011. “@FirehouseSubs New York Steamer? Really? That’s what my dog leaves on the lawn on a cold day” was posted on Twitter by Daniel Deaton on December 3, 2014.

How do Firehouse Subs employees feel about the frequent customer jokes on the sandwich name? “I had a guy do this the other day, one of our subs at work is called a New York Steamer and he went on making joking about Cleveland steamers as I rung him and other people were behind him, I did my best to smile, not role my eyes, and not say fuck off” was posted on Twitter by James Bradford II on Deember 16, 2019.

New York Steamer
Much like the Cleveland Steamer, except that while you are steamrolling the fecal matter onto your partners chest you yell “I’m working here!! I’m working here!!” in a New Yorker accent.
I upped the usual ante last night by giving her a New York Steamer instead of a regular Cleveland Steamer.

There’s a sandwich here called the New York Steamer. A slightly classier Cleveland Steamer, maybe? http://4sq.com/16NJw0d

New York Steamer… #firehousesubs you might want to reconsider using steamer in the name of your sandwich, it means pretty much what comes out of your ass the day after you eat one.
