“New York Steamer” is a trademarked sub sandwich from Firehouse Subs, a Florida-based restaurant chain. The chain began in 1994, and the name was also trademarked in 1994. Firehouse Subs describes the New York Steamer as “USDA Choice Corned beef brisket and pastrami, melted provolone, deli mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing.”
 
The name “New York” was probably chosen because the sandwich resembles New York deli sandwiches of corned beef and pastrami. “Steamer” might possibly evoke the famous 1807 steamboat of Robert Fulton (1765-1815). “Steamer” might also mean hot food, especially food that is steamed. “Steamie” (“steamé” in French) is the name of a Montreal hot dog.
   
In the 1990s, the slang term “Cleveland steamer” developed, with “steamer” meaning a (steaming/steamrolling) pile of defecation. The term “New York Steamer” was added to the Urban Dictionary on June 24, 2009, and again to the Urban Dictionary on January 13, 2010, but the New York term is not standard slang and appears just an arbitrary extension of “Cleveland Steamer.”
