“No run, no fun” (fishing adage)

“No fun, no run” is a fishing adage that has been popular around Sydney, Australia. When the tide is running, the fun (for fishing enthusiasts) starts. “Another influencing factor can be the amount of current. The old adage of ‘no run, no fun’ can be right on the mark” was cited in print in 2003. It’s not known who first said the adage.

“No run, no fun” is also a running (fitness) adage.

Another influencing factor can be the amount of current. The old adage of ‘no run, no fun’ can be right on the mark. If the tide’s fairly moving, the bream’s window of opportunity to strike at passing prey is greatly reduced – he has to strike straight away or miss out. Hopefully, for the angler, the fish will opt to strike straight away!

Could only get a photo of 2 cos someone had to take the shot. With the maximum neap tides yesterday and today the old adage for river fishing of “no run no fun” is proving itself.

Howdy all

My brother and i are planning a trip to Weipa in mid October. We have been inspired by modern fishing’s “Barra on Bike” and will be taking the trusty pushies and ‘doin the damdge’ from the shore.
Can’t get a straight answer on best tides.

Big ones so that there is a heap of water movement. (ie no run, no fun)

The other bonus of these high tides is the variations in the tides. I’ve quoted countless times the old saying ‘no run, no fun’ and with the variations reaching around 1.5m at times this month, some good tidal flow will be experienced.

I live in northern Sydney and there must be literally hundreds of places to fish in the lower harbour where you would be a good chance of catching a few Luderick. There are a few things to look for. Ribbon weed and kelp beds, rocky points, jetties, bridges and floating pontoons. All of these have a few things in common, a supply of food and tidal movement. “No run no fun” is a common saying in fishing circles, it just describes what most observe, that fish bite best with the running tide. Of course this isn’t universal but it does generally apply to luderick. One of the consequences of tidal movement, is that it will create eddies as described before. Another consequence is that fish will be more likely to take a bait when the current is moving, and you will get more consistent “downs”. Sometimes the fish will bite at slack water, but can be maddeningly difficult to hook.

OFFSHORE fishers are still waiting for the kingfish run to start, at the moment there have been some caught, but they have been outnumbered about 20:1 by undersize kings.

Just when things looked like they were picking up the current stopped, and as the old saying goes “No Run - No Fun”. The water has also settled to around 21c.
