Nookies (deep-fried chocolate chip cookies)

Deep-fried chocolate chip cookie dough was a hit at the 2007 State Fair of Texas, although deep-fried cookies had been served at other state fairs before this time. In 2008, Torchy’s Tacos of Austin, Texas, introduced “Little Nookies’—deep-fried chocolate chip cookies. It remains to be seen if the “nookies” name for this food item catches on.

Last Friday night, taco fans celebrated the opening of the newest Torchy’s Tacos outlet (2809 S. First, 444-0300), located in the refurbished former home of the legendary Virginia’s Cafe. This is the second new Torchy’s, but this one has inside seating, and though the building is on the small side, there are some picnic tables outside for al fresco dining. Torchy’s chef/owner Michael Rypka and his staff served up “damn good tacos” to the appreciative crowd along with their newest signature item, deep-fried chocolate-chip cookies, called Little Nookies…

After the tacos I was stuffed. Fletcher was determined to keep going though. He tried the dessert nookies - battered and deep fried chocolate chip cookie dough dusted with powdered sugar. No wonder Texas is known for it’s overweight population! We have food like this to eat!
