Northwest East Village

The East Village, in Manhattan, is east of Greenwich Village. The boundaries are usually between 14th Street on the north, the FDR Drive or East River on the east, Houston Street on the south, and Third Avenue on the west.

The New York (NY) Times reported on June 14, 2013:

“As New York neighborhoods get sliced and diced like onions into increasingly small sections, a scrap of Lower Manhattan has now become the ‘Northwest East Village’ — that is, if one is to believe the developers of a condominium there called the Jefferson.”

The Jefferson, at 211 East 13th Street, coined “Northwest East Village” on its website and in its advertising. Several blogs commented on the directional clumsiness of adding “northwest” to “east.” However, it was noted that the advertising appeared to have worked and the location sold quickly.

As New York neighborhoods get sliced and diced like onions into increasingly small sections, a scrap of Lower Manhattan has now become the “Northwest East Village” — that is, if one is to believe the developers of a condominium there called the Jefferson.

It is at 211 East 13th Street — comfortably inside the purported new neighborhood, which, according to a map on the condo’s Web site, runs from about East 11th to East 14th Street, from Avenue A to Third Avenue.

For the rest of us, the generally accepted boundaries of the East Village are East 14th, East Houston, Third Avenue and Avenue D.

The developers of the condominium at 211 East 13th street in a section of Lower Manhattan have come up with a new name for their hood, the “Northwest East Village,” leaving many to wonder if their name will stick. The New York Times reports that they might be trying to “freshen the images of the area,” or to create a buzz about the building.

Normally, the East Village has been considered East 14th, to East Houston, and Third Avenue to Avenue D. The “Northwest East Village” spans from East 11th to East 14th Street, and Avenue A to Third Avenue.

Since people are buying in the “Northwest East Village,” perhaps a new name is in order, after all.
