Nutroots

“Nutroots” (from the word “nuts,” meaning “crazy”) is a spin on the word “netroots” (Internet grassroots). The term “nutroots” is usually used by the politically conservative right against the politically liberal left.

The word “nutroots” appears to have been coined on the blog “Decision ‘08” (now called “Informed Speculation”) on March 10, 2006. This blog claims that “nutroots” is a registered trademark term, but it is not registered.

The political right coined its own “netroots”-like term— “rightroots”— in August 2006, soon after the first use of “nutroots.”

Wikipedia: Nutroots
Nutroots, a term coined by the weblog “Decision 08” on March 10, 2006, is a play on the name commonly used for liberal grassroots groups known as the “Netroots.” Once used strictly by conservative blogs in reference to their liberal counterparts, the term entered the formal political lexicon when Sen. Orrin Hatch used the term on the United States Senate floor on September 12, 2007, to describe MoveOn.org’s “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” advertisement in the New York Times.

Urban Dictionary
nutroots
A play on the term “grassroots”; referring to activists, usually Leftists, whose protests are assumed to represent mainstream public opinion but that in fact represent those of lunatics. (See Frank Chu).

The term differs from “econuts” in that the letter is presumed to concentrate on environmental activism, whereas the “nutroots” are more broad-based in their ideological interests. There is some crossover however - econuts are normally assumed to be a subset of the nutroots.

In the UK the term is usually translated as the “loony Left”.
That the WTC was destroyed by controlled demolitions planted by Bush administration employees and/or agents of the Mossad is an example of a belief common at the nutroots level.

Well, there’s another way for Mark Warner – deliberately bypass the loser Trippi and the squawking Nutroots®, and pay them no mind whatsoever, as their power is a figment of their very large imaginations. Markos and his ilk will not like Warner no matter what he does – leave the pandering to John Kerry, and campaign for the heartland, and you might win not only the nomination, but the election.

Anyway, that’s my advice…and unlike the Kos, I’ll offer it free of charge…

Political Bloggers: Netroots or Nutroots?
My son and I have argued over time about the potential influence of political blogs, ie. whether they constitute “netroots” or “nutroots”. His fairly traditional coursework taught him that the left cancels out the right in the grassroots and the numbers of the liberal blogosphere were not significant enough to make much difference.

Dems and the nutroots
I haven’t written of the fratricidal warfare going on in America’s left as the NYT and TNR duke it out with lefty blogger Kos.

Armstrong popularized the term, so you may want to take his word, but it seems to me that netroots has developed in the lexicon as a reference to the Internet left - the bloggers, online activists and progressive groups like MoveOn.org that work online for progressive change offline. Many conservative bloggers agree, which is why they’ve staked out their own term, “Rightroots,” and why they try to debase the term netroots as “nutroots” or “radical netroots.” But judging by the impact on politics, we’ll be hearing a lot more about the netroots than the rightroots.

And that is what it is for the Dems and their extremist “nut-roots”.... a game.
