NYCE (New York Cash Exchange)
"NYCE" is the New York Cash Exchange. It's probably on your ATM card. It started in 1985, when several large New York banks allowed transactions by any member bank customer at any member bank's ATMs.

A notable early exception was Citibank, but Citibank has now joined NYCE. According to http://www.nyce.net, there are about 189,000 ATMs in the network.

NYCE - nice name, right? There were at least two others: the New York Computer Exchange and the New York Cotton Exchange.

6 December 1984, New York Times, pg. D26:
The New York Cash Exchange, made up of eight banks that have agreed to allow their depositors to have access to the automatic tellers of all the group's members, has hired Korey, Kay & Partners to promote the service. (...) THe banks are the Bank of New York, Barclays Bank of New York, Chemical Banl, Goldome, Manufacturers Hanover, National Westminster Bank, Marine Midland and Union Trust.

7 March 1985, New York Times, pg. D1:
Big New York Banks
Link Teller Machines
By Richard W. Stephenson

A group of some of the largest banks in the New York area said yesterday that they had joined in a three-state network that will allow millions of customers to use automated teller machines of any member bank.

Known as the New York Cash Exchange, or N.Y.C.E., the system initially permits customers of five New York banks - Chemical Bank, the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, Marine Midland Bank, The Bank of New York and Barclays Bank of New York - as well as the Union Trust Company, based in Stamford, Conn., to make cash withdrawals and balance inquiries at any of the group's automated teller machines.
(...)
Notable for its absence from the group is Citibank, which has about 635 teller machines in 249 locations in the metropolitan area, more than any other single bank.
