Barack Obama’s organization for his presidential run in 2008 was called ‘Obama For America” (OFA). When Obama became president in January 2009, the organization was renamed “Organizing For America” (OFA). In January 2013 (following Obama’s re-election), the organization was renamed again as ‘Organizing For Action” (OFA).
 
Some have suggested other names for the initials “OFA.” Pat Dollard made several tweets in 2013 that OFA stands for “Over For America.”

Organizing for America was a community organizing project of the Democratic National Committee. Initially founded after the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama, the group sought to mobilize supporters in favor of Obama’s legislative priorities, particularly health care reform. Eventually, the organization played a role in the midterm elections of 2010. Later, it became the grassroots arm of Obama for America. After Obama’s second inauguration, it was reorganized as Organizing for Action and returned to its previous mission of organizing around the President’s agenda.

The formation of Organizing for America was announced by then-President-Elect Obama on January 17, 2009.
 
The group officially began operations on the third day of the Obama administration, January 23, 2009. On the same day, it was announced that Mitch Stewart would serve as the first Director. Jeremy Bird, a former Obama for America field operative, was named Deputy Director.
 
In mid January 2013 the organization was transformed into a nonprofit group Organizing for Action.
