“Politics and crime are the same thing”

“Politics and crime, they’re the same thing” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The line was said in Italian by the character Don Tommasino (played by Vittorio Duse) to the character Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) in the movie The Godfather Part III (1990). “Politics and crime are the same thing” is a frequent form of the saying.

“‘Politics and crime - they are the same thing.’ That one is emblazoned across the screen in subtitles, indicating that the Italians knew long ago the lessons of the S&L scandals” was printed in Cineaste (1991).

“‘Politics and crime are the same thing,’ says one of the executive mafia dons” was printed in The Whig-Standard (Kingston, ON) on January 12, 1991. “‘Politics and crime are the same thing’ <- saw this on a shirt and it sparked a neuron in this brain of mine hmmmm….." was posted on Twitter by angelica on October 13, 2010.

Wikipedia: The Godfather Part III
The Godfather Part III is a 1990 American crime film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola from the screenplay co-written with Mario Puzo. The film stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy García, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, and Sofia Coppola. It is the third and final installment in The Godfather trilogy. A sequel to The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), it concludes the fictional story of Michael Corleone, the patriarch of the Corleone family who attempts to legitimize his criminal empire. The film also includes fictionalized accounts of two real-life events: the 1978 death of Pope John Paul I and the Papal banking scandal of 1981–1982, both linked to Michael Corleone’s business affairs.

The latest movie, dissecting the illness of the body politic of our own time, uncovers the combined cancer of politics, money and crime. “Politics and crime are the same thing,” says one of the executive mafia dons, who later concludes, “Finance is a gun, politics is knowing when to pull the trigger.”
