“Popcorn is a steamed vegetable”

“Popcorn is a steamed vegetable” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on February 3, 2021. Corn is a vegetable, and corn kernels are heated to make popcorn.

However, no one seriously includes popcorn on a list of “steamed vegetables.” The post became popular on Reddit—Showerthoughts, but was removed by moderators. People had commented that the corn kernels are not “steamed.”

Wikipedia: Popcorn
Popcorn (popped corn, popcorns or pop-corn) is a variety of corn kernel which expands and puffs up when heated; the same names are also used to refer to the foodstuff produced by the expansion.

A popcorn kernel’s strong hull contains the seed’s hard, starchy shell endosperm with 14–20% moisture, which turns to steam as the kernel is heated. Pressure from the steam continues to build until the hull ruptures, allowing the kernel to forcefully expand, from 20 to 50 times its original size, and then cool.

It’s crazy how I went from thinking “popcorn is basically a vegetable” when I was a kid to “steamed corn is basically the candy of the vegetable world” as an adult.

Technically it’s fried…

Roasted. It is coated in fat and cooked via radiant heat (oven roasted) or on high heat while constantly stirring in a pot or pan (pan roasted). Frying would imply either partial or complete submersion in hot fat.

Popcorn actually won’t pop if you steam it. Moisture ratios are extremely important when making popcorn. If you steam if, the shell will soften before the internal structure liquefies and you’ll just get… corn, really.
