“Popcorn is a vegetable”

Corn can be considered a rain, a vegetable and a fruit. What about popcorn?

”Рорсоrn is a vegetable” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on May 20, 2020. Almost no one who eats popcorn believes it is a vegetable, however.

Is Corn a Grain, Vegetable, or Fruit? The Answer Is D, All of the Above
Who knew corn was such a multitasker?!

Look for corn in the grocery store, and you’ll find it in the veggie section. The most recent USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans lists corn as both a starchy vegetable and grain.

Even the Whole Grains Council is on board with a hybrid definition. “Fresh corn is usually classified as a vegetable, and dried corn (including popcorn) as a grain,” it states.

So while botanically speaking corn is not a vegetable, you can still get away with calling it one.

Is corn a fruit, a vegetable, or a grain?
Another classic debate for the ages, answered as thoroughly as possible.

There’s a decent, if highly philosophical, argument to be made that we should go by the definition that most people use. If folks think of squashes as vegetables, maybe they are vegetables. The same might go for corn. For his part, Pritts acknowledges that we do eat corn as we do other veggies, but notes that still doesn’t technically make it one. We’ll leave it to you to decide which definitions you want to abide by—there’s a decent argument for them all.

Is Corn A Grain, A Fruit, Or A Vegetable? Here’s What Nutritionists Say
Or…all three?

“The definition of a vegetable is ‘a usually herbaceous plant grown for an edible part that is usually eaten as part of a meal,’” Gorin says. Yep, corn definitely fits the bill.

Plus, the 2015-2020 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans also lists corn as both a vegetable and a grain, she adds. So the double-identity is actually legit.

Ultimately, like many other types of produce, corn can be considered a grain, a vegetable, and a fruit.

For nutritional purposes, corn hasn’t been classified as a vegetable for a while. It is a starch. So are potatoes.
Ergo, if corn isn’t a vegetable, neither is popcorn.

Corn was never a vegetable as far as I know. It’s a grain/cereal because corn is a grass (Poaceae).
A potato is a root vegetable. It’s in the same genus (Solanum) as tomatoes and eggplants.
