Public Health Capital of the World

Geneva, Switzerland (home of the World Health Organization and Atlanta, Georgia (home of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have both been called the “Public Health Capital of the World.” New York City aspired to that nickname, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio often used the term in 2020 and 2021.

“New York is poised to win the future. We have the foundation to become the life sciences and public health capital of the world. Let’s make that happen — and focus on training New Yorkers for the jobs that will be a growing part of our economy when I am Mayor” was posted on Twitter by Scott Stringer (New York City’s comptroller and then a candidate for mayor) on September 8, 2020.

“We’re the public health capital of the world” was posted on Twitter by Mayor Bill de Blasio on December 3, 2020. “We were once the epicenter of the #COVID19 crisis. Our hospitals held the line and led the fight back. Now we’re going to become the public health capital of the world” was posted on Twitter by Mayor Bill de Blasio on January 21, 2021. “New York City will become the public health capital of the world” was posted on Twitter by Mayor Bill de Blasio on April 28, 2021. “Thank you, @NYCMayor @BilldeBlasio — it has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your Health Commissioner. You have truly made NYC the public health capitol of the world. I wish you the best on your next adventure!” was posted on Twitter by Commissioner Dave A. Chokshi, MD on December 31, 2021.

In his speech, Stringer wanted to provide hope to city residents who have suffered during the COVID-19 era.

“We also must recognize that there are thousands of workers who are not going back to their old jobs, because those jobs don’t exist anymore,” said Stringer. “We will confront that challenge head-on. New York, particularly now, has the foundation to become the life sciences and public health capital of the world. So let’s focus on training New Yorkers for those jobs—the health care and tele-health jobs… the design and engineering jobs… that were a growing part of our economy before, and will be again when I am mayor.”

Looking ahead, de Blasio said the lab was “the start of a bigger effort” to prepare the city for future global health challenges but also, given the large number of respected hospitals and research institutions, to make it “the public health capital of the world.”

A Recovery for All of Us: Mayor de Blasio Announces Plans to Advance City’s First Pandemic Response Institute
April 15, 2021
NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today released a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking partners to launch and operate the Pandemic Response Institute (PRI), a new institution dedicated to preparing New York City for future pandemics and public health emergencies. The Institute is part of an ongoing vision, outlined in Mayor de Blasio’s State of the City address, to make New York City the public health capital of the world.

Supported by a commitment of $20 million in City funds, the PRI will work to make the best aspects of New York City’s response to COVID-19 permanent, while addressing gaps in health infrastructure for the future – especially those that have disproportionately caused harm to communities of color and others facing structural inequities.

“New York City is determined to do more than recover from COVID-19. We will become the public health capital of the world – and ensure that no matter what the future holds for us, our city can mobilize immediately to keep New Yorkers safe,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “The PRI will drive innovation, expand our life science capacity, and create job opportunities to drive a recovery for all of us.”

NYC injects another $500M into life sciences industry with goal of being world’s public health capital
By: Ariel Pacheco
Posted on June 9, 2021
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city will invest another $500 million into the life sciences industry, doubling down on its initial investment back in 2016.

The combined billion-dollar bet is part of de Blasio’s plan to make New York City the public health capital of the world. The original investment helped create labs at academic institutions, funded paid internships, and created over 2 million square feet of new life science space. The additional investment will help to spur on that growth.
