Boremont (Beaumont nickname)

The city of Beaumont is so unexciting to some that it acquired the nickname “Boremont” by the 1990s. The city has promoted itself with new, official nicknames and has added entertainment areas, but the “boring” old nickname is still sometimes used.

Wikipedia: Beaumont, Texas
Beaumont is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Texas, United States, within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 113,866. With Port Arthur and Orange, it forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Gulf Coast.

Lamar University is based in Beaumont. The city’s daily newspaper is The Beaumont Enterprise, while The Examiner is published weekly.

Gulf States Utilities had its headquarters in Beaumont until its absorption by Entergy Corporation in 1993. GSU’s Edison Plaza headquarters is still the tallest building in Beaumont (as of 2007). Since 1907, Beaumont has been home of the South Texas State Fair. In 2004, the venue for the Fair changed to Ford Park, a new, larger facility on the west end of Beaumont.

Urban Dictionary
Boremont
The most boring, uncultured, ghetto, while at the same time redneck, little town known to mankind that doesn’t deserve to call itself Texas, because it has absolutely nothing to do with Texas culture and might as well be Louisiana.

Also has the worst school system in the country, which isn’t saying much, considering that American public schools suck anyway.

“I’m sick of Beaumont ISD canceling all the gifted programs and discriminating against white people.”
“Yea, let’s move to Lumberton, I’m sick of Boremont.”

The street name should be S Dowlen. If I’m thinking of the right apts, they’re the kind you’d expect a chain-letter geek to be living in…

Andrea, dear, you mispronounced the name of my hometown. It’s “Bore-mont.”

You see, about two years ago two major oil companies got together and decided to merge. That meant they had duplicate facilities doing the same research, so they closed one and sent the people with the highest seniority to Houston. Something most of them resented since they came from Boremont (Beaumont/Port Arthur).

If you’re ever in the Beaumont (Boremont) area at the same time I am I’ll be glad to take almost anyone out there.

8 June 2003, Houston (TX) Chronicle, “Live from Crockett Street; Some people used to call it “Boremont,” but Beaumont’s new Crockett Street Dining and Entertainment District seems to be changing that” by Rogayle Franklin, Texas magazine, pg. 8:
It’s almost a full house, and the night is still heating up in the town that some residents used to call “Boremont.”

13 August 2003, Beaumont (TX) Enterprise, “Wanted: Snappy nickname for ‘new’ Beaumont”:
Or, as the cynical sometimes say, Boremont?

20 July 2006, Beaumont (TX) Enterprise, “CVB helps natives understand, represent Beaumont to visitors”:
Jul. 20—Beaumont natives could use a trip around their own city so they can represent it better to visitors, a local training program urges. “People here call Beaumont, ‘Boremont,’ only because they don’t know what all there really is to do here,” Coldwell Banker Southern Homes real estate agent Dayna Simmons said Wednesday in a telephone interview. Simmons is one of 65 recent graduates from the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Destination Training Program. The training sessions are designed to create camaraderie among local service employees and bolster their ability to thrill visitors with some of Beaumont’s less well-known attractions.

Satan Tonio welcomes you
Welcome to the Alamo City, also known as by a dozen or so obscure nicknames.

City nicknames can be odd. Sometimes, the Chamber of Commerce comes up with them. Other times, visitors come up with them. And very often, the hoi polloi of the community come up with them.

These nicknames can reflect the heart and soul of the community, or the delusional dreams of the residents, or the vindictive nature of neighboring communities.

I found all of these on Wikipedia. Normally, I wouldn’t trust Wikipedia with important information, but this seems harmless enough ...
