“Scalloped potatoes don’t contain any seafood. This is clearly false advertising”

There are no scallops in scalloped potatoes—but there are jokes about this.

Wikipedia: Scallop
Scallop (/ˈskɒləp, ˈskæləp/) is a common name that encompasses various species of marine bivalve mollusks in the taxonomic family Pectinidae, the scallops. However, the common name “scallop” is also sometimes applied to species in other closely related families within the superfamily Pectinoidea, which also includes the thorny oysters.

Wikipedia: Gratin
Potatoes gratiné
Potatoes gratiné
is one of the most common of gratins and is known by various names including “gratin potatoes” and “Gratin de pommes de terre”. Slices of boiled potato are put in a buttered fireproof dish, sprinkled with cheese and browned in the oven or under the grill (broiler). They may also be baked under a steamed crust of potatoes. In North America, the dish is referred to variously as funeral potatoes, potatoes au gratin, scalloped potatoes, or au gratin potatoes. In French-speaking Canada, the dish is referred to as patates au gratin. Australians and New Zealanders refer to it as scalloped potatoes or potato bake. In North America, traditionally au gratin potatoes include cheese and scalloped potatoes do not, but this classic differentiation has been lost to time.

remembering the kid who worked with me in a camp kitchen one summer who made scalloped potatoes…from scratch.
“Aren’t you going to have some?” I asked him as everyone else ate.
“Can’t,” he said matter-of-factly. “I’m allergic to seafood.”
Still don’t know if he was serious.
