“Science flies you to the moon; religion flies you into buildings”

Victor J. Stenger, an American particle physicist and religious skeptic, wrote in The New Atheism:Taking a Stand for Science and Reason (2009):

“Science flies us to the moon. Religion flies us into buildings.”

The latter sentence refers to the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The word “us” is replaced by “you” (“Science flies you to the moon; religion flies you into buildings”) in many citations. “Moon” is infrequently replaced by ‘Mars” (“Science flies you to Mars; religion flies you into buildings”).

“Science built skyscrapers and airplanes, but only religion can bring the two together” is a related saying.

Victor John Stenger is an American particle physicist, philosopher, author, and religious skeptic.

Following a career as a research scientist in the field of particle physics, Stenger is now associated with New Atheism and he also writes popular science books. As of July 2013, he has published twelve books for general audiences on physics, quantum mechanics, cosmology, philosophy, religion, atheism, and pseudoscience, including the 2007 best-seller God: The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows that God Does Not Exist. His latest book is God and the Atom: From Democritus to the Higgs Boson (2013).

He is a strong advocate for removing the influence of religion from scientific research, commercial activity, and the political decision process, and he coined the popular phrase “Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings”.

Victor Stenger thought of this great original slogan as a possible ad for the bus campaign, or perhaps for something else? Maybe we could start running ads like this as banner ads on popular websites, too?

@nine11inreverse It was not I who coined that splendid aphorism. I wish it were. It may have been Victor Stenger.

Victor J Stenger still wins the atheist quote of the century though.
‘Science flies you the moon. Religion flies you into buildings’.
