“Sex education classes are like in-home sales parties for abortions”

American constitutional lawyer and conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly (1924-2016) was no fan of sex education in schools. Schlafly wrote in a syndicated newspaper column in April 1985:

“Sex education classes are like in-home sales parties for abortions.”

The quotation has been frequently reprinted.

Phyllis McAlpin Stewart Schlafly (/ˈfɪlᵻs ˈʃlæfli/; August 15, 1924 – September 5, 2016) was an American constitutional lawyer and conservative activist. She was known for her staunch social and political views, her opposition to modern feminism, and her successful campaign against the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Her 1964 book A Choice Not an Echo, a push-back against liberal Republican leader Nelson Rockefeller and the powerful eastern Republican establishment, sold more than three million copies. She co-authored books on national defense and was highly critical of arms-control agreements with the former Soviet Union. Schlafly founded the Eagle Forum in 1972 and the Eagle Forum Education & Legal Defense Fund. She was the Eagle Forum board chairman and CEO and maintained a presence on the lecture circuit until her death.

25 April 1985, Marietta (GA) Daily Journal, “What does ‘sex education’ in schools really mean?” by Phyllis Schlafly (Copley News Service), pg. 4A, col. 5:
The $600-million-a-year business is using the public schools, financed by taxpayers, to conduct its sales meetings and recruit its customers. Sex education classes are like in-home sales parties for abortions.

And, if parents object, a well-organized smear brigade moves in to denounce them as “censors,” “right-wingers,” “fundamentalists who don’t want their children to take ‘biology’” and “rednecked enemies of public school.” What a racket!
