“Shamdemic” (sham + pandemic) has been used to describe a fake pandemic. “Shamdemic” was posted on the newsgroup misc.health.aids on September 9, 2004.
 
The 2009 swine flu pandemic popularized “shamdemic.” “Is it just me or does swine flu sound more and more like a shamdemic than a pandemic? The American news agencies are selling snake oil again” was posted on Twitter by R. Josh Quarles on April 30, 2009. “MMR – Myths and Maths - An Epidemic or another Shamdemic?” was posted on Twitter by Leslie Carol Botha on May 30, 2009.
   
The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic also popularized “shamdemic.” “Pandemic shamdemic” was posted on Twitter by NYC SHUTDOWN WK 5 on February 24, 2020. “#Shamdemic is upon us.. #Coronavirus #CODVID19” was posted on Twitter by RLC Words Fan on February 28, 2020.
 
“Fakedemic” (fake + pandemic), “hoaxdemic” (hoax + pandemic), “propagandemic” (propaganda + pandemic) and “scamdemic” (scam + pandemic) are similar terms.
