Smokeout (barbecue cookout/festival)

The term “smokeout” usually refers to the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout”—a day when people are encouraged to give up smoking. The American Cancer Society has held “smokeouts” since 1976 and “Great American Smokeout” is trademarked.

Chicago’s “Windy City Smokeout” was held July 12-14, 2013 and was trademarked “Entertainment in the nature of a barbecue and country music festival.” The word “smokeout” here means a barbecue cookout. Baylor University (Waco, TX) held a “Bear Smokeout” in April 2003, featuring local barbecue vendors, live bands, a dunking booth, face painting and competitions. However, there were few officially named “smokeouts” before the Windy City Smokeout in 2013.

April 3, 2003
WACO, Texas - The Baylor Athletic Department, the 2BU Program and Baylor Student Government are teaming to host the first annual Bear Smokeout Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark, sandwiched between the Baylor softball game versus No. 5 Nebraska at 2 p.m. and the evening baseball game versus No. 9 Texas at 6 p.m.

The event will feature local barbeque vendors, live bands, a dunking booth, face painting and competitions, such as a fast pitch contest and trivia games. The culmination of the day’s events will be the Baylor-Texas game that night at Baylor Ballpark.

Together, 2BU, Student Government and the Athletic Department encourage fans to come out for a good time and to support the Baylor baseball team as they barbecue Bevo!

4 April 2003, Dallas (TX) Morning News, “Festivities compliment marquis weekend series” by Brian Davis:
The Baylor athletic department and student government have cooked up a catchy promotion for this weekend. Officials are calling it the Bear Smokeout, a full-blown barbecue fiesta filled with food, live bands, contests and face-painting booths.

Chicago: Windy City Smokeout Gave Us Meat Sweats In The Best Way
Barbecue from Texas, North Carolina and Chicago

By Adam Miller
Honky-tonk music and barbecue don’t really come to mind when Chicagoans think of the ultra-modern hotels, restaurants and shiny galleries that make up the emergent River North portion of downtown Chicago. But that’s exactly what was happening this weekend at the first annual Windy City Smokeout.

Organized by Bub City, one of Chicago’s newest barbecue joints, the three-day festival was a celebration of country music (with Jerrod Niemann, David Nail and Pat Green headlining) and, more importantly, serious barbecue — with an emphasis on the Texas and Carolina styles.
