There is “smooth jazz,” but no “chunky jazz.” Jazz is not like smooth and chunky peanut butter, but there are jokes.

Pharez is another classmate of mine from my school days. I believe he’s based out of Columbus, OH, these days, but was recording for MoJazz in Detroit at one time. The last stuff of his I heard was almost like “smooth” jazz, but like you say, more soulful (“chunky” jazz, perhaps?).
