In Britain, Humphrey Lyttelton has a weekly radio programme: “The Bestof Jazz”. It was trailed recently by an announcer who described the content as “smooth jazz”. Rightly incensed by this slander, Humph invited listeners to suggest examples of “rough jazz” for him

If there’s such a thing as smooth jazz, why isn’t there something called rough jazz? Or hard jazz. Heavy jazz. Metal jazz, even.
