Snake Hill Road (Richmond Hill Road, Staten Island)

A part of Richmond Hill Road (from LaTourette Golf Course to Arthur Kill Road and Historic Richmond Town) in Staten Island has been called “Snake Hill Road.” The road has dangerous, snake-like curves.

The name “Snake Hill Road” has been used since at least the 1980s and 1990s.

Google Maps
“Snake Hill” is the name given to a particularly sinuous hillside section of Staten Island’s Richmond Hill Road. It follows the route of a 17th century wagon road in the heart of one of Staten Island

Richmond Creek, which flows through Richmondtown and Latourette Park, flows under Richmond Hill Road in the Cemetery. Here is the last remaining 19th Century stone arch bridge left on the Island, carrying Richmond Hill Road over the creek just after it negotiates two dangerous curves on its way down Snake Hill from the Latourette Park golf course. The bridge dates to 1845.

It’s August 1983 we’re driving through Richmond Town in a ‘71 Chevelle convertible with our new video camera.  We come upon Lighthouse Hill and into the back entrance of Latourette. We circle the front of the course and then down Snake Hill as it was on that hot day in Sept. 1983

For the Staten Island Advance
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Snake Hill Road is one of the most treacherous roads on Staten Island.

Can’t find it on a map?

Well, that’s because it is not an official street name. It is a section of Richmond Hill Road just past the entrance to LaTourette Golf Course that leads down to Arthur Kill Road and Historic Richmond Town.

There are no sidewalks and the road is very steep and winding—hence the nickname Snake Hill Road.

I have been told that during years past, the road would be closed during parts of the winter because it was too dangerous to drive, but the neighborhood kids had a blast sledding down the hill. Of course, this was when there was a lot less traffic and the winters were a lot more severe.
