Spring Black Friday

“Black Friday” is the Friday after Thanksgiving—a major pre-Christmas shopping day. For home improvement stores such as The Home Depot and Lowe’s, the beginning of the spring season generates more business than does the Christmas season. These retailers have offered “Spring Black Friday” sales—actually, just another name for a “spring sale,” and one that occurs over a longer period than just a Friday. “Spring Black Friday” usually starts the first weekend in April.

“Home Depot is having a Spring ‘Black Friday’ event that spans the weekend” was posted on Twitter on March 20, 2009, but Home Depot made its first big national “Spring Black Friday” in March 2010. Rival home improvement retailer Lowe’s began its “Spring Black Friday” sale in 2012. “Spring Black Friday” was trademarked by Homer TLC, Inc (also owners of “The Home Depot” trademark) with a first use date of March 2010.

“Spring Black Friday” sales may continue through, but usually do not start on, the Christian holiday of Good Friday.

18 March 2010, CEO Wire (Waltham, MA), “Nightly Business Report”:
HUDSON: Home Depot is moving black Friday to springtime. The home improvement giant hopes a series of upcoming big sales will help jump start its busiest selling season. Last month, Home Depot gave an upbeat full-year forecast as customers begin big renovation projects. Home Depot will slash prices on several products during what it is calling a spring black Friday. The sales begin today in warmer southern and western states. Stores in the north will begin those sales in a few weeks.

18 March 2010, Dow Jones Institutional News, “Press Release: The Home Depot Moves Black Friday From November To Spring”:
ATLANTA, March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/—The Home Depot(R), the world’s largest home improvement retailer, today announced it will implement Spring Black Friday, a weekend of regional door buster deals in preparation for spring, the Company’s biggest selling season. In March and April, prices on hundreds of the most sought after spring products will be significantly reduced including: a variety of live goods and lawn care; outdoor power; eco-friendly gardening products; and patio and grills.

“Spring is our Christmas,” said Craig Menear, executive vice president for Merchandising. “Traffic in our stores is at its highest during the spring season as customers look to take on outdoor projects to improve the appearance of their homes and we want to give them the best deals possible to meet all of their outdoor needs.”

15 February 2011, Dow Jones Institutional News (New York, NY), “Home Depot Boosts Sales Season It Dubs ‘Spring Black Friday’”:
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)—Home Depot Inc. (HD) is expanding its spring selling season, doubling from two to four the number of weekends it will run “Spring Black Friday” promotions in the U.S., compared with the inaugural year of the event in 2010.

The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally known as Black Friday for most retailers, as it marks the launch of the holiday shopping season and unofficially represents the day they start turning the bulk of their annual profits. While Home Depot and smaller rival Lowe’s Cos. (LOW) have a fine holiday business, with Christmas trees and lights, as well as the tools consumers need to deal with winter weather, the spring season is when business for the pair is the most brisk. Spring is when people start purchasing all of their lawn care products, including live plants and seeds, as well as grills, patio furniture and other products to beautify their outdoor spaces.

That’s right, Lowe’s is having their Spring Black Friday sale, but don’t worry, it’s more than just a one-day free-for-all at your local strip mall. The sale is going on from now until April 17, and tons of outdoor goodies are on sale for you to finally create the backyard of your dreams. The deals mainly revolve around the great outdoors, with slashed prices on patio furniture, fire pits, grills, and decking.

Does anyone question why Lowe’s would entitle this “The Spring Black Friday Sale” during the Holy Week before Easter which includes Good Friday? Anti-Christian much?

I did not equate Spring Black Friday and Good Friday at all. Lowes has had their sale for a couple weeks now and is always in reference to the after thanksgiving sales, but for spring time. I feel like this is reaching a bit?
