“Sugar is the cocaine of the food world”

“Religion is the opiate of the masses” is a famous statement of German philosopher and economist Karl Marx (1818-1883). “Sugar is the cocaine of the food industry/world” and “Sugar is the cocaine of the masses” are similar sayings about sugar.

“Sugar is the cocaine of the food industry”—that is, sugar is addictive and destructive—was said by Daniel Vitalis in the documentary Hungry for Change (2102). “Listening to hubby editing a doco saying ‘sugar is the cocaine of the food world; it is that addictive’, as I munch on my Monte Carlo bikkie” was posted on Twitter by Maria Tedeschi on July 12, 2011. “‘Sugar is the cocaine of the food world.’ Check out this clip from @HFChange” was posted on Twitter by The Giving Table on March 8, 2012. “‘Sugar is the cocaine of the food industry’ Daniel Vitalis from Hungry For Change” was posted on Facebook on May 2, 2012.

“While scarfing down some powdered doughnuts tonight, I had an epiphany, surely unoriginal but true: sugar is the cocaine of the masses” was posted on Twitter by American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy novels Stephen King on July 31, 2017. “Sugar is the cocaine of the masses” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on December 10, 2019.

If sugar is the cocaine of the masses then chocolate has to be the opium of the world. Sweet dreams 😉
