“Summer miles bring autumn smiles” (running adage)

“Summer miles bring autumn smiles” is a popular running adage, especially among high school and college cross country runners. The miles student-runners log during the summer often result in smiles when school reopens in autumn.

“Summer miles bring autumn smiles” has been cited in print since at least 2004 and has been printed on T-shirts.

And on Orange Grove, I spotted three (I presume) high school runners. Two of them were wearing tie-dye t-shirts that said “Summer miles bring autumn smiles. Run. Sleep. Repeat.” I think they really needed an “eat” somewhere in there, but never mind.

A few comments from outgoing coach Brian Hoff…“With my retirement, and Coach Calabrese going out with me, we would like to thank the athletes for being a good group to work with this year. We (the coaches) would also like to encourage more participation in cross-country and cannot emphasize enough the benefit of putting in the necessary summer miles to be successful. As retired Plainview coach Denny Ranta says, “Summer miles bring autumn smiles.”
