Szechuan Fire (pun on “set you on fire”)

Sichuan/Szechuan/Szechwan cuisine can be spicy. “Szechuan” can sound like “set you on.” Many restaurants and restaurant dishes/sauces have been named “Sichuan/Szechuan/Szechwan Fire.”

“Migawd, this hot Chinese food can actually Szechwan fire!” was printed in the San Francisco (CA) Chronicle on August 24, 1980. “Beware of hot and spicy Chinese food.. It’ll Szechwan fire” was posted on the newsgroup alt.humor.puns on March 5, 2001. “Go easy on spicy chinese food… It’ll practically Szechuan fire” was posted on Reddit—3amjokes on August 20, 2020.

Wikipedia: Sichuan cuisine
Sichuan cuisine, Szechwan cuisine or Szechuan cuisine (/ˈsɛʃwɒn/ or /ˈsɛtʃwɒn/), is a style of Chinese cuisine originating from Sichuan Province. It has bold flavours, particularly the pungency and spiciness resulting from liberal use of garlic and chili peppers, as well as the unique flavour of Sichuan pepper. There are many local variations within Sichuan Province and the neighbouring Chongqing Municipality, which was part of Sichuan Province until 1997. Four sub-styles of Sichuan cuisine include Chongqing, Chengdu, Zigong and Buddhist vegetarian style.

There are 219 dishes on the menu, and some of them are something special—the kitchen can do good work when it’s willing to put the blands in the past and make food spicy enough it could Szechwan fire.
