Texas Trash (Chex mix dish)

Chex cereal has a dish called “Texas Trash.” The dish was popular in the 1970s and 1980s, but the exact origins are uncertain.

Wikipedia: Chex Mix
Chex Mix (stylized as Chex mix) is a type of snack mix that includes Chex breakfast cereal (sold by General Mills) as a major component. There are commercially sold pre-made varieties of Chex Mix, as well as many recipes (often printed on Chex cereal boxes) for homemade Chex Mix. Though contents vary, the mixes generally include an assortment of Chex cereals, chips, hard breadsticks, pretzels, nuts or crackers. It is generically known as Nuts & Bolts, particularly outside the United States.

mix hot from the oven? Huh?

Around Christmas time, his family would always make homemade Chex mix. I wasn’t sure if it was a Texas thing, but either way, I was smitten in more ways than one.

And the recipe is actually quite simple. It takes time, but just to bake, so you can kick back, relax and let the oven do all of the work!

New 2002 Recipe!
What is Texas trash? It’s just the crazy name Texans bestowed on the food known to mere mortals as Chex cereal mix. Here’s my own version…

I don’t have any hard and fast rules about the amounts of cereal or types of nuts, but my trick is in the cooking method. I rarely burn my mixture because I keep the temperature far below the official Chex mix recipes.

Ingredients: Your choice of Chex cereals (wheat, rice, corn, multigrain). I prefer more of the corn and rice because the seasoning will darken everything and if you use too much wheat and grain the final product looks too dark. (...)
