“The answer may not lie at the bottom of a bottle, but I always like to check” is an earlier version of this saying (from 2009).
   
“I think my patience is at the bottom of this coffee cup. Hang on while I find it” and “It turns out the answer to my problems wasn’t at the bottom of this pint of ice cream, but the important thing is that I tried” are related sayings.
