“The government just banned the fifth month of the calendar year. Everyone was dismayed”

The word “dismay” has nothing to do with the month of May, but there are jokes.

“Dismay: To insult the 5th month” was posted on the newsgroup alt.humor.puns on March 23, 2005. “Dismay. Verb. To insult the fifth month” was posted on Twitter by Glinsman Weller on August 8, 2014. “Dismay = Someone who makes a negative comment about the fifth month of the year” was posted on Twitter by Uxbridge English Dic on October 31, 2014.

“The government just banned the fifth month of the calendar year. Everyone was dismayed” was posted on Reddit—Jokes on February 23, 2020. “Someone removed the 5th month from all my calenders. I am really dismayed” was posted on Reddit—Dadjokes on March 1, 2021.

“It’s June 1st! We’re all dismayed” is a related joke.

Wikipedia: May
May is the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and the third of seven months to have a length of 31 days.
(...)
May (in Latin, Maius) was named for the Greek Goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for “elders,” and that the following month (June) is named for the iuniores, or “young people” (Fasti VI.88).
