“The income tax created more criminals than any other single act of government”

“The income tax created more criminals than any other single act of government” is a tax saying that has been printed on many images. American politician Barry Goldwater (1909-1998), then a retired Republican Senator from Arizona, made the remark on the PBS interview show Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr. on November 17, 1989. Goldwater said:

“A lot of our trouble stems from our income tax. It’s like when we practiced Prohibition—it made more drunks in this country than anything we ever did. We passed the income tax amendment and we created probably more crooks than any other act. Americans should be free to earn, to spend and to govern without anybody’s outside or inside having any effect on those operations.”

Wikipedia: Barry Goldwater
Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 – May 29, 1998) was an American politician, businessman and author who was a five-term Senator from Arizona (1953–1965, 1969–1987) and the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in 1964. Despite his loss of the 1964 presidential election in a landslide, Goldwater is the politician most often credited with having sparked the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. He also had a substantial impact on the libertarian movement.
