“The team, the team, the team”

Many coaches stress the team concept, but this was especially important to University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler (1929-2006). Schembechler said to his 1983 team:

“We want the Big Ten championship, and we’re going to win it as a team. They can throw out all those great backs and great quarterbacks and great defensive players through the country and in this conference, but there’s going to be one team that plays solely as a team. No man is more important than the team, no coach is more important than the team. The team, the team, the team!”

The 1983 Michigan Wolverines football team beat rival Ohio State, 24-21, on the last scheduled game of the season. The team lost the Sugar Bowl against Auburn and finished he season 9-3.

Wikipedia: Bo Schembechler
Glenn Edward “Bo” Schembechler, Jr. (April 1, 1929 – November 17, 2006) was an American football player, coach, and athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Miami University from 1963 to 1968 and at the University of Michigan from 1969 to 1989, compiling a career record of 234–65–8. Only Joe Paterno and Tom Osborne have recorded 200 victories in fewer games as a coach in major college football. In his 21 seasons as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Schembechler’s teams amassed a record of 194–48–5 and won or shared 13 Big Ten Conference titles. Though his Michigan teams never won a national championship, in all but one season they finished ranked, and 16 times they placed in the final top ten of both major polls.

They’re talking about Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler, who has cut an ad for Domino’s pizza, which is owned by Detroit Tiger owner Tom Monaghan. Schembechler stands in front of a blackboard, assumes his best win-one-for-the-Gipper look and informs a group of delivery boys that “I want it hot. I want it fast. I want it right. Now go out there and deliver. The team! The team! The team!”

“If we think that way – all of us – everything you do, take into consideration what effect does it have on my team? Because you can go into professional football, you can go anywhere you want to play after you leave here. You will never play for a team again. You’ll play for a contract, you’ll play for this, you’ll play for that. You’ll play for everything except the team. Think what a great thing it is to be part of something that is the team!

“We’re going to win it. We’re going to win the championship again because we’re going to play as a team. Better than anybody else in this conference, we’re going to play together as a team. We’re going to believe in each other, were not going to criticize each other, we’re not going to talk about each other. We’re going to encourage each other!

“When we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know it’s going to be Michigan again.

Michigan.”

One mantra spilled regularly from the lips of Bo Schembechler: “The team, the team, the team.”

BO SCHEMBECHLER: “The Team, The Team, The Team”

One of the most famous speeches about The Team came from legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler in 1983. Here is how he addressed the Wolverines:

“We want the Big Ten championship and we’re gonna win it as a Team. They can throw out all those great backs, and great quarterbacks, and great defensive players, throughout the country and in this conference, but there’s gonna be one Team that’s gonna play solely as a Team. No man is more important than The Team. No coach is more important than The Team. The Team, The Team, The Team, and if we think that way, all of us, everything that you do, you take into consideration what effect does it have on my Team? Because you can go into professional football, you can go anywhere you want to play after you leave here. You will never play for a Team again. You’ll play for a contract. You’ll play for this. You’ll play for that. You’ll play for everything except the team, and think what a great thing it is to be a part of something that is, The Team. We’re gonna win it. We’re gonna win the championship again because we’re gonna play as team, better than anybody else in this conference, we’re gonna play together as a team. We’re gonna believe in each other, we’re not gonna criticize each other, we’re not gonna talk about each other, we’re gonna encourage each other. And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know, it’s gonna be Michigan again, Michigan.”
