“There are only two places you should never attempt a drop pass—home and away” (hockey adage)

A “drop pass” in ice hockey is when a player passes the puck directly behind him to a teammate. Many believe that it’s a very dangerous pass. “There are only two places you should never attempt a drop pass—home and away (on the road)” is a popular hockey saying.

“Two places you don’t pull a drop pass: home and away” was posted on Twitter by Buffalo NY on January 26, 2010. “Theres two places you shouldnt use a drop pass: home and away #HarryNeale” was posted on Twitter by Caputis Patutis on November 19, 2011. “Quoting legendary Montreal player and coach, Toe Blake, Neale said, ‘There are only two places you shouldn’t use a drop pass – home and away’” was printed on the hockey blog Between the Posts by Howard Berger on January 13, 2014.

Authorship is uncertain. Hockey broadcaster Harry Neale has frequently been credited with the saying, as has hockey coach Tom McVie.

LEAFS LOOKING FOR A “BIG BODY”
By HOWARD BERGER
TORONTO (Jan. 13, 2014) –

A BELLY-LAUGH: The Maple Leafs made a wonderful call by summoning Harry Neale for a handful of games this season. The former NHL coach, elected last summer to the Hockey Hall of Fame’s broadcasting wing, has long been among the most entertaining voices on TV. He offered a splendid anecdote during Sunday night’s New Jersey at Toronto telecast, seconds after Mason Raymond of the Leafs made an errant drop-pass in Devils’ territory. Quoting legendary Montreal player and coach, Toe Blake, Neale said, “There are only two places you shouldn’t use a drop pass – home and away.”

Like the old joke about two places never to make a drop pass — at home, and on the road — there are times to try that cross-ice pass, and times to keep it in your holster.
