“This is a self-cleaning kitchen—clean up after yourself”

“This is a self-cleaning kitchen—clean up after yourself” is a popular sign in many kitchens, printed on many refrigerator magnets. The saying has been cited in print since at least 1989.

1 May 1989, Toronto (Ontario) Star, “Just waking up is reason to whine” by George Gamester, pg. A2:
THIS IS A SELF-CLEANING KITCHEN. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF.

11 January 1991, Sun-Sentinel (Jacksonville, FL), “Stick with ‘em: Magnets are hot, cling resolutely to the refirgerator…” by Barbara Dinerman, pg. 1E:
Her favorite, among the 25 or so on her refrigerator, is: “This is a self-cleaning kitchen. Clean up after yourself. Dottie’s off-duty.”

I know that birds have little birds, and fish have little fishes, then why don’t sinks have little sinks, instead of dirty dishes?

Pg. 1:
“Just testing your eyesight, Jamie,” she had said, pointing to the little plastic sign above the sink. “Read.”

Fourteen-year-old Jamie adopted his insolent humor-the-mother voice and read in singsong, “This is a self- cleaning kitchen — clean it yourself.”
