“Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them”

“Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them” is a saying that has been printed on many images. That is, according to the speaker, someone who needs a leader is weak and is willing to give up civil liberties to another—and is therefore not qualified to choose a leader. Ukrainian-American author, and podcaster Michael Malice has said this since at least 2016.

“‘Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them.’ @michaelmalice” was posted on Twitter by “everything’s a scam” on March 3, 2016. “Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them. That’s the central problem with democracy” was said by Michael Malice on TomWoodsTV, aired on YouTube on June 10, 2016.

“‘The problem with democracy is that those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them’ @michaelmalice has a great point” was posted on Twitter by Great Big Imperium Respecter on October 3, 2020. This longer quote is from Malice’s interview in this YouTube video by Lex Fridman on October 2, 2020. “The problem with democracy is that those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them” was posted on Twitter by Michael Malice on August 7, 2022.

“Best @ComicDaveSmith quote: those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them” was posted on Twitter by Winston on May 22, 2019. Dave Smith, a comic and libertarian, also used the saying, but did not coin it.

“People who need leaders aren’t fit to choose them” was posted on Facebook by Dom Scarcella on December 5, 2019. “‘People who need leaders aren’t fit to choose them.’ Michael Malice"was posted on X/Twitter by LeRoy S. Douglas on December 7, 2019.
