“Threw my neighbors a really nice housewarming party. The cops are calling it arson, however”

A “housewarming party” usually doesn’t involve “warming the house,” but there are jokes. “Positive spin #13: ‘Arson, m’lord? Not at all. We just misunderstood what a housewarming party entailed’” was posted on Twitter by Craig on December 6, 2010. “Just had a huge argument with the neighbor over the housewarming party I threw him, or as he called it, ‘arson’” was posted on Twitter by Some Dude on July 20, 2011.

Forms of the joke were popularized on the Sickipedia website. “Threw a housewarming party for the pakis next door. Well. I called it a housewarming. The police called it arson” was posted on Twitter by sickipediabot on July 22, 2011. “I threw a housewarming party for my new muslm neighbours. Well, I called it housewarming, the police called it arson” was posted on Twitter by sickipediabot on May 24, 2013.

“A space heater makes a great housewarming gift” and “When I moved into my new igloo, my friends threw me a housewarming party and now I’m homeless” are other “housewarming party” jokes.

Wikipedia: Housewarming party
A house-warming party is a party traditionally held soon after moving into a new residence. It is an occasion for the hosts to present their new home to their friends, post-moving, and for friends to give gifts to furnish the new home. House-warming parties are generally informal. Usually there are no planned activities besides a possible tour.

I called it a “housewarming party”. The District Attorney called it “aggravated arson”. Semantics.
